Mondays can be better than good
My fascination with photography began at primary school when my father, an enthusiastic photographer, would set up his enlarger on the kitchen bench at night. He and my mother would mysteriously shine a light on a blank piece of paper and when this paper was dropped into a tray of funny smelling water, a picture would magically appear bit by bit. A year or two later I was allowed to stay up and watch, and sometimes help, as pictures from our life would magically appear. As a teenager I got right into all aspects of photography and later I married Tony who was right into photography (and movies) too.
The excitement of taking photographs and spending hours in the darkroom creating and manipulating images is something you never lose. Now it’s within reach of anyone with a computer. What a fabulous world!
Even better, now I can combine it with a passion for fabric and print photos on to cotton and silk.
For larger fabric runs I prepare files and give them to a wonderful commercial fabric printer who works with the high end of the fashion industry. For smaller works there is still the excitment of printing in our studio.Monday was a day where we got to share this with other people when I held a workshop for Anna and Jennifer, two reps for Jacquard who make lovely silk organza, silk habutai and cotton for printing. Whilst Tony sorted the computer problems we played with images and printed some great pieces of fabric.Next step is combining the printed fabrics with Jacquard paints and with threads and collage so the images simply become part of the media of textile art!
