Toile de l’Australie has been an excuse to play a lighthearted, affectionate and respectful tribute to some of the folklore of the Australian way of life.
The eighteenth century Toile de Jouay fabrics portrayed contemporary life, myths and classical images. They were wonderfully detailed drawings taken from the equally detailed book engravings of the period.
Some of the most familiar pictures of red or blue on white are country scenes framed with branches of fruit and flowers floating across plain fabrics., others were very formal designs.
Over the centuries they have acquired a romance which has made us completely forget that they were current images when they were first printed. These fabrics are still printed, still copied, imitated and still much loved.
If the inventive brothers Oberkamph who started it all could make Toile de Jouay fabrics with today’s technology, they would surely have a riotous time with computer design, modern dyes and digital printing techniques.
You will notice that some of the work has joint credits – this is because when we get fired up about a project and brainstorm and photograph together we often don’t know at the end who is responsible for what. Other work is definitely and obviously individual and labeled accordingly.
